The Pinehill Community is located approximately 60 miles southeast of the heart of Navajoland and Gallup, New Mexico. With the recent development of the El Malpais National Monument, tourism activity has increased tremendously. The location provides routes to such major attractions as the El Morro National Monument, the Ice Caves, Chain of Craters, and the Zuni Pueblo, making Highways 53 and 602 prime travel routes. The Pinehill Shopping Center was completed in December 1993 and sits on a seven acre commercial tract—12,000 square feet. An additional 11,544 square feet are set aside for future development. The development of the Shopping Center has served as a tremendous economic boost to the local community providing much needed basic goods and services that are now more easily accessible. As a result, the community can shop locally, without traveling to major border towns, thus preventing leakage of the Navajo dollar.
