The Navajo name for Tuba City, Tó Naneesdizí translates as “tangled waters” which refers to the many springs below the surface of the ground which, are the source of several reservoirs. Tuba City is located within the Painted Desert on the western side of the Navajo Nation. The town is situated on State Route 160, near the junction of State Route 264. Tuba City is located approximately 77.4 miles from Flagstaff, Arizona and 50 miles from the eastern entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. Most of Tuba City's residents are Navajo, with a small Hopi Tribal Village. It is considered one of the fastest growing communities and is among the top growth centers within the Nation. The Tuba City Shopping Center was constructed in 1983 and provides goods and services to the western portion of the Navajo Nation.
